Prepare Your Trees to Thrive in Spring
Much like in winter and in summer, spring brings a change of weather which has an effect on your trees. Because of this, the experts at Jim’s Trees recommend that you take the time to ensure your trees are well-prepared for the springtime. Using our professional arborist knowledge, we have included what you need to do to ensure your trees are in tip-top shape and ready to embrace the warmer months!
How to prepare your trees for spring
Weed & tidy
Spring marks the time for an annual clean, both inside and out, and your trees are no exception! Dead leaves, winter mulch and coverings, and any other general debris should be removed from your tree and disposed of properly. It’s also the time to get weeding! While one or two weeds may seem harmless, but in the warmer weather they can quickly take over. When weeding, make sure you are pulling out the roots and disposing of them so they are completely removed.
Add some mulch
Time to get mulching! To help maintain moisture and prevent the growth of weeds, you can apply 3-4 inches of mulch to your trees. We recommend using organic mulch over inorganic as it will protect your tree and prevent the loss of water and nutrients.
Apply fertiliser
As your trees start to recover from the colder months, it’s the perfect time to apply fertiliser. By fertilising your trees earlier, you can help boost their growth and bloom for when spring is in full swing! We recommend using a slow-release so they can receive their nutrients all spring-long and improve resistance to pests and disease.
Create a watering schedule
When the weather begins to warm up, you will want to create a watering schedule to ensure your trees don’t dry out in the spring. The ideal watering technique will depend on whether your tree is established or not. Younger trees (under three years of age) should be watered closer to the trunk as the roots have not spread as far. With a more established tree, it’s best not to water directly near the trunk and in a wider circle. When watering, ensure the water reaches the roots and not just the top soil. It’s much better to “deep water” less frequently.
Prune your trees
Spring is a great time to prune your trees! Unlike trimming, pruning your trees involves the removal of any dead branches and can dramatically affect the growth of your tree. To avoid causing any damage to your tree, it’s best to use a professional pruning service. The experts will ensure that your tree is pruned properly and will encourage healthy growth, as well as improve the aesthetics.
