Essendon Tree Removal Services

Our Essendon crews spend as much time keeping trees healthy as they do taking them down. Around 60 per cent of our Moonee Valley crews’ work is maintenance, including tree pruning, weight reduction and reducing older trees to a size that suits the block. When removal is the right call, the same crews handle the whole job, from sectional dismantling through to stump grinding and clean-up.

Each crew is run by a local franchisee who has passed a police check, and our $10 million public liability policy covers all work.

Alongside Essendon, our teams look after homes throughout Moonee Valley and the inner north-west, as part of our wider tree removal service across Melbourne.

Essendon falls under Moonee Valley City Council, and trees on private land here can be protected in three different ways.

Moonee Valley’s Activities and General Amenities Local Law 2018 requires a permit for works to any tree on Council’s Significant Tree Register. It also covers canopy trees, which council defines as trees with a trunk circumference of 1.1 metres or more measured 1.5 metres along the trunk, or 1.5 metres or more at ground level.

Clause 52.37 has applied across Victoria since September 2025 and sets a much lower bar. On most residential blocks, it requires a planning permit to remove or lop a tree that is more than 5 metres tall, has a trunk circumference over 50cm at 1.4 metres above ground and a canopy at least 4 metres wide. This means a tree too small for the local law can still need a permit.

Specific trees listed in the Environmental Significance Overlay need a planning permit to be removed, or to have any branch over 10cm in diameter pruned.

Read our guide to tree removal and pruning in Moonee Valley for the full details, or ask your local crew to check what applies when they come out to quote.

Support With Permits

Mature trees are heavy, and their condition is not always obvious from the ground. Decay inside a trunk or a weak branch union can turn a simple cut into a dangerous one. Climbing with a chainsaw, working near power lines, or lowering limbs over a roof calls for training, rigging gear, and a crew that does it every day.

Bringing in a professional also gives you more options. A reduction prune or deadwooding can often make an old tree safe while keeping the shade and character it brings to your property.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Essendon?

Quite possibly. Moonee Valley requires a permit for significant trees and for canopy trees with a trunk circumference of 1.1 metres or more, and the state canopy tree rule applies to many smaller trees as well. Your local crew can help you check before any work starts.

Can you prune a large old tree instead of removing it?

Often, yes. Most of our Moonee Valley work is pruning and maintenance, and a reduction or weight-reduction prune can make an older tree safer without losing it altogether. Our arborists will tell you if removal is genuinely the better option.

How do I know if my tree is on the Significant Tree Register?

Moonee Valley City Council keeps the register, so council can confirm whether your tree is listed. If you are unsure, mention it when you request a quote and our crew can help you find out.

What affects the cost of tree removal in Essendon?

The size of the tree, its condition and how easy it is to reach all play a part, along with whether a permit is needed. Large trees in established backyards with narrow side access usually take longer. Every quote is free, so you’ll know the cost before any work begins.
