South Australia is known for its stunning natural beauty; from its winding rivers that feed into expansive wetlands to the wondrous coastline, forests, and national parks. The urban forest is at the heart of the state’s natural beauty, which is why South Australians trust Jim’s Trees with everything from maintaining and nurturing their healthy trees, to removing and wood chipping their unwanted ones.
From Nairne to Hallet Cove and all throughout Adelaide, Jim’s Trees franchises are ready to help you.
South Australia’s climate is characterised by hot dry summers and cool, wet winters. This diversity helps to promote strong growth in the spring, but can leave trees (particularly in introduced species) vulnerable to sun damage through the dry summer months. As such, it is important to maintain healthy trees throughout the year to improve their resilience to changing weather conditions and minimise the risk of unhealthy or damaged trees.
To help you stay on top of your tree care, our Tree Surgeons and Arborists offer a full range of services to care for your trees through every stage of their life cycle. This includes:
How much do tree services cost in South Australia?
The total price of having your tree pruned, felled, or removed can vary depending on a number of factors. The size and type of tree will impact the number of people required to tend to it safely—Palm Trees and Yuccas, for example, are more demanding than smaller species. This also influences the machinery needed for the job. The location of the tree on your property is another factor—think of trees that are hard to reach, or ones that are right next to your home and take extra care to remove without damaging your roof.
For these reasons, it’s important to speak with a Jim’s Trees specialist for an accurate quote, as the cost of each service can vary depending on the conditions.
Do you need a permit to prune or remove private trees in South Australia?
Each local government has their own specific laws and procedures in place to protect against the removal or destruction of healthy or significant trees. These laws differ from council to council, so it’s always recommended that you contact your local council in South Australia before starting any major tree removal or lopping to determine whether a permit is required.
Your Jim’s Trees arborist can help with this, and will get all the info needed to complete the job responsibly before getting started on your property.

What are the latest tree removal rules in South Australia?
As of May 2024, the South Australian Government has introduced new planning regulations to protect a greater number of trees.
Now, trees with a circumference of one metre are classed as regulated trees, and those with a two metre circumference are classified as significant trees. There are also new pruning limits implemented, stating that only 30% of the tree’s canopy can be pruned and removed every five years.
The old regulations on tree removal have been adapted, and now, only trees within three metres of a home or pool can be removed without prior approval (this used to be 10 metres).
The fines for destroying or removing protected trees have increased significantly to $1,000 for regulated trees (up from the previous fine of $326) and $1,500 for significant trees (from $489).
