Frankston and surrounds: Frankston, Frankston South, Frankston North, Karingal

Bayside: Seaford, Carrum Downs, Skye, Sandhurst

Peninsula gateway: Langwarrin, Langwarrin South, Baxter, Mount Eliza

Because Frankston has its own tree protection local law, and because some properties fall within a Bushfire Prone Area, our crews know the ins and outs of the areas they work in and can tell you what applies before a job goes ahead.

Frankston falls under Frankston City Council, which protects trees through its Tree Protection Local Law and planning scheme.

Where no planning controls apply to your property, you generally need a local law permit to remove a tree with a trunk circumference of 110cm or more, measured at the base. You also need a permit to prune more than a third of a tree that size, or to carry out works affecting more than 10 per cent of its Tree Protection Zone.

Since September 2025, a statewide planning rule known as Clause 52.37 has also applied to larger canopy trees on most residential land. On a block with an existing home, a planning permit is needed to remove or lop a tree within 6 metres of the street frontage or 4.5 metres of the rear boundary if it is more than 5 metres tall, has a trunk circumference over 50cm at 1.4 metres above ground and a canopy at least 4 metres wide.

Properties within a Bushfire Prone Area may be exempt from some permit requirements. Council is also reviewing its Tree Protection Local Law in 2026, so the details may change.

Council offers free advice on which permit applies to your property, and our local crews can help you work it out before a job starts.

For more details, see our guide to understanding your council’s tree removal guidelines.

Second to None Service

Obligation-free quotes

To provide great service, we start with a free quote for every job, so you can enquire without commitment. The level of risk involved, the use of dangerous machinery and the technical skills required mean that tree services aren’t always cheap.

That’s why we believe in cost transparency, providing upfront quotes for every job with no hidden fees.

Comprehensive Insurance Coverage

Tree Removal Permit Assistance

Whether you need a full tree or just stump removal, your property may fall under one of the controls described above. Our local crews know the council process and are happy to share any experience or knowledge that could help with your application.

We also have a collection of resources on local council regulations to help you navigate your tree protection laws and permit process.

DIY tree lopping is risky, so we don’t recommend taking tree care into your own hands. If anything goes wrong, it can put you in serious danger and damage nearby property or neighbouring trees.

Tree removal and other cutting services require special tools and equipment, and that is where Jim’s Trees comes in.

As professional tree loppers, we use our expertise to keep your property safe, and we never cut down a tree unless it’s absolutely necessary. By properly caring for the trees around your home, you can increase your property’s value and avoid mistakes that could be costly in the long run.

At Jim’s, we focus on providing the best customer service to every customer, and all tree loppers and arborists on our team strive to meet the highest standards in their work.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Frankston?

Often, yes. Where no planning controls apply, Frankston City Council requires a local law permit to remove a tree with a trunk circumference of 110cm or more, measured at the base. Planning overlays and the statewide canopy tree rule can also apply. Our team can help you check before work begins.

Which suburbs do you service around Frankston?

We service Frankston and the surrounding suburbs, including Frankston South, Seaford, Carrum Downs, Langwarrin and Mount Eliza. If your suburb isn’t listed, get in touch as we’re likely already working nearby.

Can you remove a tree damaged in a storm?

Yes. Our crews handle emergency and storm-damage removals across Frankston and the surrounding suburbs, including trees that have come down on fences, roofs, or power lines. Properties close to the bay take the brunt of strong winds, so contact us as soon as it’s safe to do so.

How much does tree removal cost in Frankston?

Cost depends on the tree’s size, condition, accessibility and whether council approval is required. On larger bush blocks in Frankston South and Langwarrin, access and the amount of green waste often decide the cost. We provide free, no-obligation quotes so you know the cost upfront.
