Box Hill Tree Removal Services
Maintaining the trees on your property is essential for keeping your home and community safe, especially when a tree starts to encroach on your space or a neighbour’s.
Box Hill is changing quickly. High-rise development around the town centre sits alongside streets of older homes with mature front-yard trees, while Box Hill North and Box Hill South keep much of their leafy suburban feel. With buildings, fences and power lines close by, many jobs here call for careful sectional removal rather than felling a tree in one piece.
Our dedicated Box Hill crews are trained, qualified, and fully equipped with the latest tools and local knowledge to handle your tree removal and maintenance needs safely and in line with local regulations.

Understanding Box Hill’s Tree Removal Rules
Box Hill sits within the City of Whitehorse, where all residential areas now have some level of tree protection through the Whitehorse Planning Scheme.
Under Clause 52.37, a statewide planning rule introduced in September 2025, a permit is needed to remove, lop or destroy a tree within 6 metres of the front boundary or 4.5 metres of the rear boundary if it is more than 5 metres tall, has a trunk circumference over 50cm at 1.4 metres above ground and a canopy at least 4 metres wide. Dead trees, emergency works and listed noxious weeds are exempt.
Specific trees across Box Hill, Box Hill North and Box Hill South are also protected under Vegetation Protection Overlays, and you need a planning permit to remove, destroy or lop one of these trees. Properties within a Heritage Overlay or Environmental Significance Overlay may need a permit as well.
Council assesses each tree against both the overlays and Clause 52.37, so a tree that is clear under one may still need a permit under the other. If you only need to remove a single tree, you may be eligible for the faster VicSmart permit process.
Our local crews can help you determine which controls apply to your property before work starts.

Second to None Service
Obligation-free quotes
To provide great service, we start with a free quote for every job, so you can enquire without commitment. The risk involved, the use of dangerous machinery, and the technical skills required mean tree services aren’t always cheap.
That’s why we believe in cost transparency, providing upfront quotes for every job with no hidden fees.
Comprehensive Insurance Coverage
No one likes to take on unnecessary risk. Climbing a dying tree and lopping from the top down is unquestionably dangerous, but hiring someone to do it doesn’t have to be.
Tree Removal Permit Assistance
Whether you need a full tree or just stump removal, your property may fall under one of the controls described above. Our local crews know the council process and are happy to share any experience or knowledge that could help with your application.
We also have a collection of resources on local council regulations to help you navigate your tree protection laws and permit process.
Experience the Jim’s Trees Difference
DIY tree lopping is risky, which is why we don’t recommend taking tree care into your own hands. If anything goes wrong, it can put you in serious danger and damage nearby property or neighbouring trees.
Tree removal and other cutting services require special tools and equipment, and that is where Jim’s Trees comes in.
As professional tree loppers, we use our expertise to keep your property safe, and we never cut down a tree unless it’s absolutely necessary. By properly caring for the trees around your home, you can increase your property’s value and avoid mistakes that could be costly in the long run.
At Jim’s, we strive to provide the best customer service to every customer, and all tree loppers and arborists on our team strive for the highest standards in their work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Box Hill?
It depends on the tree and where it sits on your block. Larger canopy trees near your front or rear boundary generally need a permit under Clause 52.37, and specific trees in Box Hill are protected under Vegetation Protection Overlays. Our team can help you check before work begins.
Which suburbs do you service around Box Hill?
We service Box Hill and the surrounding suburbs, including Mont Albert, Blackburn, Nunawading, Burwood, Mitcham and Surrey Hills. If your suburb isn’t listed, get in touch as we’re likely already working nearby.
Can you remove a tree damaged in a storm?
Yes. Our crews handle emergency and storm-damage removals across Box Hill and the eastern suburbs, including trees that have fallen onto fences, roofs, or power lines. Get in touch as soon as it’s safe to do so.
How much does tree removal cost in Box Hill?
Cost depends on the tree’s size, condition, accessibility and whether council approval is required. On tighter blocks and near the town centre, access and nearby buildings often decide the cost. We provide free, no-obligation quotes so you know the cost upfront.
